After Dark

After Dark by Japanese author Haruki Murakami is a symbolic and thought-provoking novel set over the course of a single night in Tokyo. The story begins when Mari, a young university student, meets a woman working at an all-night diner, and their lives become entangled with a cast of mysterious night dwellers — from musicians to lonely strangers and shadowy figures living on the city’s edges. Meanwhile, Mari’s sister, Eri, lies in a mysterious sleep that blurs the line between dreams and reality. Through these intertwined stories, Murakami explores themes of light and darkness, isolation and connection, and the fragile boundary between the conscious and the subconscious. With his poetic and surreal style, he paints a haunting reflection on time, solitude, and the unseen connections that bind us.
